Open Dialogues on Gender Violence Awareness

Diya invites all its members and the rest of the Duke community to an open discussion on gender roles and gender violence on Monday, October 28, in McClendon 2nd floor. Social worker and Women’s Center advocate Sheila Broderick will be in attendance, and the discussion itself will be led by fellow Duke students. We will discuss gender in the context of Duke’s social life, academic life, and countless other groups in order to identify some of the issues in our community. Also, we will try to see how race plays into all of this! While we plan on maintaining a focus on the South Asian community, this event is for students of all backgrounds! So, please join us in these open dialogues that challenge our perceptions and ultimately help Duke become a better, safer place! Join the FB event here for updates!

Duke’s First Ever Bone Marrow Registration Drive!

Intimidated? Don’t be. Did you know 75% of modern marrow donations involve just giving blood, much the same way you already do? Finding marrow donors is extremely difficult due to misconceptions about donation, some of which many Duke students have.

Duke Diya, DSI, and Duke Lambdas will be hosting West Campus’ first-ever Bone Marrow Registration Drive this Wednesday, October 9 from 4-7PM on the BC Plaza. We will also accept FLEX donations to help Be The Match cover the cost of adding donors to their registry.

Joining the registry only takes a cheek swab. Please consider coming out on the 9th and joining for free! You can sign up for a time slot to speed up registration at http://bit.ly/dukemarrow or show up at your convenience next Wednesday.

Thanks everyone who came out and registered! If you didn’t get a chance to register, no worries! Another bone marrow drive is prospectively planned for sometime in the spring!

Thanks for coming out to Diya’s Freshman Dinner!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Freshman Dinner! We hope that you all had a great time eating food and getting to meet each other. At the dinner we paired up Lil Sibs and Big Sibs who were selected by combining freshmen and upperclassmen with similar interests so that freshmen could have someone to go to for advice and questions that they may have about their new college experiences. Everyone had a great chance to mingle and get to know their Big and Lil Sibs. The dinner, catered by Raaga in Chapel Hill, was wonderful and we had a whopping 150+ students come in to eat with us. They enjoyed it so much that the trays of food were cleared within the first half hour!

We also talked about the Triangle Mixer which is coming up on Friday, September 20th from 10 pm to 2 am, the Bone Marrow Drive for which more information will be coming soon, and the performances you can get involved with in Awaaz, the largest student-run production on campus. Make sure to contact us if you have any questions!
